Updated: Aug 21, 2020

Scholarship's 1st recipient honors the legacy of the man who inspired the movement.

Mo A., class of 2016 - Mo will attend Stanford University, where she plans to study in the humanities. After completing all of her education, Mo plans to pursue a career in journalism and social innovation. During her time at Valdosta High School, she was involved in the Varsity Women’s Tennis Team, Key Club, the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, the Speech and Debate Team, the International Club, and PawinPrint (the student newspaper). Mo was crowned Miss Valdosta High School 2016 earlier this year, in addition to being named the VHS STAR Student for the 201516 academic year.

As the first recipient of the Benjamin E. Gordon Memorial Scholarship, Mo shares the following:

“I am truly blessed to have received this scholarship in memory of a man who loved his family so dearly that he worked hard day in and day out to help them fulfill their dreams. I am grateful to be yet another individual touched by Mr. Gordon’s legacy.

As the recipient of this scholarship, I was contacted by founder Brittney Gordon who so graciously lent herself as a resource for my future endeavors. I was positively touched by her words and actions as she welcomed me into a network that I didn’t even know existed a network of Mr. Gordon’s loved ones. The privilege of receiving the Benjamin E. Gordon Memorial Scholarship brings with it an impetus of motivation to pursue my own dreams.

No matter how far away I am from the city of Valdosta, I know I have become a part of something much bigger than myself. For this, I am forever grateful.”
