Recipient Spotlight: Benjamin E. Gordon Memorial Scholarship

Spotlight on scholarship recipients 2017 - 2023



The Benjamin E. Gordon Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Valdosta High School Senior who plans to enroll in a 4-year university after graduation. This student not only excels academically, but also exemplifies the character traits of integrity, responsibility, humility, and self-discipline.

 

Tylin, class of 2023 - Tylin is an ambitious and involved individual who's received recognitions such as the 'Navy Corps JROTC Highest Grade Point Average 2019-2022' and the 'Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts: Art of Writing 2022 Honorable Mention Award.' In addition to his grades and extracurriculars, Tylin has a passion for helping others, bias towards action, and is determined to forge his own path. He plans to attend Georgia State University as a part of their Honor's College in the Fall.



 

Kaleb, class of 2022 - Kaleb is a highly regarded student-athlete who has demonstrated consistent focus, perseverance, and drive both on the football field and in the classroom. In addition to receiving several other scholarships Kaleb was also named ‘Best All Around’. He has plans to pursue a career in Engineering and will no doubt continue his success.



 

Jaida, class of 2021- In addition to receiving the 2021 Benjamin E. Gordon Memorial Scholarship, Jaida was also named Senior Superlative: Best All Around Student and received several additional scholarships at Valdosta High School's Honors Night! She has a reputation for being determined, reliable, and involved in her community and will no doubt continue to lead at Fisk University where she plans to pursue a Business degree.



 

Chasidy, class of 2020 - Inspiring. This is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Chasidy. She has plans to pursue a career in both Health Care and Law to help families fighting for justice. In addition to many extracurricular activities like Beta Club and Marching Cats Dance Line, she was one of one hundred students chosen among thousands to attend the Steve Harvey / Essence Magazine / Walt Disney World Dreamers Academy. We wish her the best of luck as she gets her start at Kennesaw State in the fall!





 

Lauren, class of 2019 - Lauren plans to attend Kennesaw State University this fall and will major in Criminal Justice. During her time at Valdosta High, she participated in Volleyball and completed dual enrollment at Georgia Military College where she made President’s list (Winter ’18) and Dean’s List (2018), and will receive her Associates degree in Criminal Justice. Her ultimate goal is to become an FBI agent, and she is well on her way!




 

Khaniah, class of 2019 - Khaniah will graduate with honors from Valdosta High and plans to attend Mercer University as a Biology / Pre-Med student. From there she plans to become a pediatrician. Not only was she involved in several clubs (Spanish, Recycling, BETA, and more) at VHS, but she also started The Silver Lining Club, an organization to connect with the elderly in nursing homes.




 

Jacqueline, class of 2018 - Jacqueline Escalera is nothing less than spectacular. As an involved member of several school-affiliated organizations, First Team All Around Region Varsity Soccer Player, and Georgia Merit scholar, she has worked to build a foundation that will serve her well into her future. Described by one of her teachers as someone who “balances so many responsibilities with ease and expertise,” Jacqueline plans to attend Georgia Tech University and major in Industrial Engineering and have a career in that field. In addition, she plans to continue to serve her community though mentorship and possibly a scholarship of her own.




 

Davis, class of 2017 - Davis plans to attend the University of Georgia to study agriculture. During his time at Valdosta High, Davis participated in several extracurricular activities like Beta Club and Golf Club Captain while maintaining a high GPA. One of his references, former State Senator Tim Golden, quotes, “I believe that Davis has the intellectual ability, maturity, integrity and potential for an outstanding career Agriculture. It is my great honor and privilege to give Davis my highest recommendation for your scholarship award. This would be an outstanding accomplishment for any young person and I know that Davis will be a proud addition to the list of those who have attained this prestigious award.”
